内容記述 Learning about the circumstances that led to drug-induced suffering in the past is important to create a society without such suffering in the future. As some students have never heard of the thalidomide tragedy or HIV-tainted blood scandal that occurred before they were born, the importance of learning about drug-induced suffering is growing every year. In educational settings where the generation of students regularly changes, lectures based on the same curriculum do not necessarily have the same educational effects. Therefore, it is desirable to evaluate and improve education curricula on a regular basis. This study examined the educational effects of lectures on drug-induced suffering for students in their first year at Department of Pharmaceutical Science, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science of Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University.
The educational effects were evaluated by quantitative text analysis of student reports on drug-induced suffering after the lectures.
Students who described in their reports: the drugs responsible for drug-induced suffering; people and organizations involved in these cases; and tragic situations that resulted, accounted for more than 50% in all cases. In contrast, the rate of students who mentioned laws and relief systems related to drug-induced suffering did not reach 10%.
The results demonstrated that the lectures on drug-induced suffering given at our university were highly effective to learn about the circumstances that led to such suffering, but less effective to learn about systems to prevent such cases and provide relief for victims. This point needs to be improved in the future.
