There are many types of insulin, a drug for treating diabetes, and it is self-injected. if a patient does not understand how to self-inject insulin or the injection units, it is impossible to properly treat the patient and there is a risk of hypoglycemia. To help with patient instruction in pharmacies, we created a questionnaire survey on insulin usage and hypoglycemia for patients prescribed insulin in the sanmu area in Chiba prefecture.
For this questionnaire survey, responses were obtained from a total of 91 patients, 50 males and 41 females. among those responses, 66% of patients experienced hypoglycemia, and 10 patients had symptoms of coma and loss of consciousness due to hypoglycemia. There was one patient who did not understand the exact units of insulin injection. There were 4 patients who kept insulin in the freezer, including for storage, while in use, and unused.
One patient did not accurately understand the units of insulin. and during use, 4 patients kept insulin preparations in the freezer, including unused insulin, even though patient instruction thoroughly explains how to use insulin, symptoms of hypoglycemia and its treatment, as well as how to store insulin. Thus, in home healthcare, pharmacists must always confirm the storage condition of medicines, including insulin, and instruct patients as necessary. |
